MarineLab Undersea Laboratory

From 1985 - 2018, the MarineLab Undersea Laboratory was located in a lagoon at the Marine Resources Development Foundation’s campus in Key Largo. Hundreds of aquanauts, ranging from high school students to physicists and medical researchers, visited or even stayed overnight in the Undersea Lab.

The MarineLab Undersea Laboratory was raised from the lagoon in 2018 and restored to its 1985 condition. Visitors can climb up inside the habitat and experience what it was like for aquanauts staying underwater, without having to get wet!

The Legacy of Ian Koblick

Ian Koblick, founder of parent organization Marine Resources Development Foundation, has a long career in undersea technology. He was a test diver for many models of rebreathers, designed the LaChalupa (now Jules’) habitat from the viewpoint of the aquanauts who would be living and working in it, and has contributed to the NOAA Diving Manual and many scientific journals and publications.

Learn more about Ian’s life and experiences - including many personal anecdotes and stories - and view the actual rebreather used in the Tektite II mission, among others.
