Jules’ Undersea Lab
Located in the Jules’ lagoon at MarineLab Undersea Park & Museum, Jules’ Undersea Lab is the world’s only underwater habitat where any recreational diver can experience what it’s like to live, learn and sleep underwater! It’s a 24 hour underwater educational experience. Jules’ has been an undersea research station, an exclusive hotel, and now an educational attraction as part of the non-profit MarineLab.
Some of our distinguished visitors include Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler, actor Tim Allen and former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau! We’ve been featured in several magazines and broadcast shows, too.
We are pleased to announce a new extended mission in Jules’ Undersea Lab, called the Veterans’ Decompression Project, which is scheduled to begin on November, 2027.

Tour Jules’ Undersea Lab in 3 hours
Your Mission Director will guide you on an exploration of Jules’ Lagoon, where you’ll discover its marine life and underwater artifacts before making your way into Jules’ Undersea Lab.
Once inside the moonpool you’ll rinse and dry off with provided towels before touring Jules Undersea Lab. You will learn about the habitat’s unique history, how its underwater systems and technology work, and how Jules continues to be used today for education, research, training, and underwater missions.
And don’t worry about missing the photo opportunities! We’re happy to bring your cell phone down. This tour is an excellent way to fill in a blank spot in your dive vacation or as an alternative to a blown-out reef dive!

Live, Learn & Explore Inside the World’s Only Publicly Accessible Undersea Habitat for Certified SCUBA Divers
Experience what it is like to live and learn underwater inside Jules’ Undersea Lab, a historic undersea habitat located 22 feet beneath the surface of the Florida Keys.
After 24 hours, you will become an Aquanaut living in an environment originally designed to support people working, training, and conducting research beneath the sea. Your experience combines underwater exploration, marine life observation, hands-on tasks, and learning about the science and technology that make life underwater possible.
Your 24-Hour Aquanaut Mission at Jules’ Undersea Lab
Day 1 — Descend, Learn & Begin Your Mission
Your mission begins with a welcome from the Mission Director, followed by a site and safety orientation and preparation for your underwater stay.
You will enter Jules’ Lagoon for a guided dive and descend through the moon pool into Jules’ Undersea Lab.
Once inside, you will receive an orientation to the habitat, its systems, and the practical considerations of living underwater. You will also learn about the history and technology of undersea habitats, with a special focus on Jules and the role habitats have played in underwater exploration and research.
Then, it is time to settle into your new underwater environment.
Enjoy our world famous pizza lunch, delivered by your Mission Director.
Explore Like an Aquanaut
Your afternoon is dedicated to your first Aquanaut Excursion Dive.
Rather than simply exploring the lagoon, you will have an opportunity to take on a hands on underwater task. Depending on your mission, you may:
Map and measure an artifact site in the lagoon
Complete an underwater construction task featuring a flange attachment
These activities encourage you to observe, document, measure, and work underwater experiencing some of the practical aspects of life in an undersea habitat.
Observe the Underwater World After Dark
As daylight fades, your mission continues with a dusk or night dive focused on marine life observation.
Using underwater lights, identification cards, observation sheets, and tank glow sticks, you will look for and document the changes in marine life as the lagoon transitions from day to night.
Return to Jules afterward for dinner, free time, and a night of living and sleeping beneath the surface.
Day 2 — Continue the Mission
After a night of sleeping with the fishes, experience the unique routine of beginning your day underwater.
After breakfast, you will complete your third Aquanaut Excursion Dive, continuing the underwater activity selected during your mission.
Then it is time to prepare for your return to the surface.
Your Mission Director will collect your belongings and prepare the way for your ascent. You will be escorted safely back to the surface, with an opportunity for a special photo as you complete your mission.
Before departing, you will receive your Honorary Aquanaut Certificate and final Saturation Dive Log paperwork a record of your time living and working beneath the surface.

*The PADI Aquanaut Specialty Certification is available for an additional $100 per participant. It is not necessary that all individuals in the party request the specialty.
FAQs
Do I have to be a certified SCUBA diver?
Yes. Because the Aquanaut Mission involves living in an underwater habitat, participants must hold at least an Open Water SCUBA certification. Junior Open Water divers must participate with a parent or legal guardian who is Open Water certified.
Can non-certified divers participate?
Yes, but only Open Water students or Discover Scuba Diving participants accompanied by their SCUBA Instructor. The instructor must be part of the group and accept responsibility for supervising the non-certified divers. Please see our policy for full details. See our policy for details.
Can I book a mission by myself?
No. Divers must participate with a buddy. If you do not have someone to join you, try contacting your local dive shop, taking a refresher or specialty course, or asking another diver from your class or dive community to join you.
What is your policy on minors?
All minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. See our policy for details.
What items and medications are not permitted inside Jules’ Undersea Lab?For safety reasons, the following items are not permitted inside the habitat:
Aerosol sprays
Cigarettes, vaping devices, or any smoking products
Alcohol or recreational drugs
Hair dryers, curling irons, heating pads, or other heat-producing electrical devices
CPAP/BiPAP machines or other non-approved electrical medical equipment
EpiPens or injectable emergency medications
Antihistamines or medications that may impair alertness unless previously approved by the Mission Director.
